Can I ask my therapist about their life? Cultural and professional background? Video background? If they have lived experience with my issues?
Short answer, yes! Therapists are often portrayed as emotional walls in the mainstream media. We’re human too! However, it is important to understand that the therapist will only share as much about themselves that is relevant to the relationship between themselves and the client. To help the therapist determine how the information would be helpful, you can expect them to answer with another question: “I’m curious to know what will it do for you to hear my answer?” This helps therapists make sure that they don’t assume the reason why you’re asking for this information and deepens their understanding of your perspective.
During a consultation however, therapists will typically not answer with the question mentioned above. This is the time for you to ask any and all questions that are relevant to your desired experience in therapy. Therapists treat a consultation like a mini job interview, and the client is the employer.
If the information your therapist provides you gives you pause, always feel free to request a moment to digest the information. Your therapist will appreciate the intention.
